Staged capital beats a round size you had to invent

Ask an early founder how they arrived at their raise number and you will usually hear a range that sounded defensible rather than a plan that needed exactly that much money.

The round size then becomes the constraint. You hire to justify it, you spend to the runway, and the next round has to be raised against whatever the money happened to buy.

Tranches change the question

Staged deployment ties capital to milestones you already believed in. The question stops being "how much can we raise" and becomes "what does the next milestone cost".

  • Smaller first cheque, less dilution up front
  • Each tranche is evidence for the next one
  • The traction story writes itself in order

It is slower to set up and considerably harder to spend badly.
